- Set a Budget — The first thing you should do when shopping for engagement and wedding rings is set a budget. Determine how much you’re comfortable spending and stick to it!
- Determine What You Like — Figuring out what type of ring you’re looking for will help narrow down your search and make it easier to allocate your budget. If you want a simple solitaire engagement ring and plain metal bands, you’ll have plenty of options regardless of your budget. If you prefer a halo setting and pavé band, you may need to consider diamond alternatives for your rings.
- Shop the Sales — Many online retailers offer year-round discounts as well as seasonal sales. They also have a ton of gorgeous jewelry in their website’s sale and clearance sections.

- Moissanite — one of my favorite stones for engagement rings; moissanite is made from space dust and is a gorgeous, sparkly, ethically-obtained stone.
- Morganite — this pink blush member of the beryl family is a gorgeous choice for an engagement ring.
- Diamond Simulates — some diamond simulates, such as Nexus Diamonds, are durable and inexpensive options for engagement jewelry. I wouldn’t recommend purchasing a cubic zirconia ring, however. You want your engagement ring to last, and unfortunately, cubic zirconia will become cloudy over time.
- Gemstones — I love gemstone engagement rings! They’re perfect if you’re looking for something less traditional. You can choose a birthstone or a gem with sentimental meaning to you (or just pick a color you like!)
- Alternative Metals — Although I don’t love sterling silver for a wedding ring (it tends to tarnish), there are several silver rings on this list. If it means the difference between finding your dream ring and staying on budget, it’s not the worst compromise to make. There are a lot of simple bands, especially for men, in inexpensive metals such as titanium and tantalum as well.

I don’t think morganite gets enough credit when it comes to alternative engagement rings. The dreamy, pale pink stone is a member of the Beryl family, along with emerald and aquamarine. It’s not quite as hard as a diamond, sitting at around a 7.5 on the Mohs scale, but it’s durable enough for daily wear, provided you take care of it. Morganite is also considerably more affordable than diamonds or moissanite!

I actually debated over whether or not to include this ring on the list for a very long time. I decided it was just too pretty not to include. Still, I want you to be able to make an informed buying decision, so I need to stress that opal is not hard enough for everyday wear. If you do decide to purchase this ring as an engagement ring, know that the center stone will scratch pretty easily (opal falls around a 5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, vs. diamond which is 10).
That being said, I think this ring is breathtaking. The dreamy center opal is flanked by crossing bands and diamonds on the shoulder, giving it a fairytale-like sparkle. There’s nothing like the play of color in an opal.
