Blue Nile Vs Kay Jewelers

Blue Nile and Kay Jewelers are two of the most recognized names in diamond jewelry, and both share the same parent company: Signet Jewelers, the world’s largest retailer of diamond jewelry.

Yet despite that shared ownership, they’re not the same.

I’ve worked in the jewelry industry for almost 10 years, and I know how overwhelming buying a diamond ring can be. This comparison breaks down which of these two brands fits your needs before you start shopping.

Blue Nile Vs Kay Jewelers

Founded in 1999, Blue Nile was one of the first online diamond retailers and remains a pioneer in the space. Signet Jewelers acquired it in 2022.

Its standout features are the size of its diamond inventory and the quality of its images and 360° videos. It’s best suited to anyone buying jewelry online who wants a wide range of options and price points.

Kay Jewelers, on the other hand, offers diamond rings and wedding jewelry across a large retail footprint. Brothers Sol and Edmund Kaufmann founded the company in a small Pennsylvania jewelry shop in 1916; Signet Jewelers acquired the Virginia-based chain in 1990.

Its strength is its store count across the U.S. and the personalized, in-store service that comes with it. It suits someone who wants to browse online, then complete the purchase and get advice in person (typically with the diamond already set).

Blue Nile Vs Kay Jewelers: Features Comparison

Diamond Inventory

This is the biggest difference between the two brands. Blue Nile’s online inventory is one of the largest and most complete in the industry, spanning natural, lab-grown, and colored diamonds. Critically, these diamonds can be bought loose, which is a feature few online sellers offer.

Kay Jewelers doesn’t sell loose diamonds, only finished jewelry, and its ring customization tool doesn’t let you select a specific stone. Where Kay pulls ahead is design variety: it carries designer collections like Neil Lane and Monique Lhuillier, which Blue Nile doesn’t offer.

Pricing

Pricing depends heavily on the diamond chosen. Blue Nile tends to have a wider price range because you select the specific stone, while Kay Jewelers sells pieces with the diamond already set. For a complete piece, Kay’s markups run higher.

Most shoppers start by comparing prices before settling on a ring style, which is a mistake. My advice? Decide on the setting and diamond type first. Cost is driven by design complexity and materials, so pricing only makes sense to compare once those choices are made.

Customization

Both brands offer ring-design tools that let you choose the diamond shape, setting, band, and metal, but the tools work differently.

Blue Nile’s tool, Creative Studio, starts with diamond shape and carat weight, then moves to head style (15 options), metal type, and band style. The key step: you then choose the actual diamond, based on the quality specs you want, and can view the finished ring in 360° video and rendered angles.

Kay Jewelers’ tool starts by choosing between a diamond or gemstone center stone, then stone shape, then one of three diamond quality tiers. You don’t select or see the actual diamond; Kay chooses it for you based on the quality tier.

Just so you know: Kay Jewelers and Jared share exactly the same design software.

Financing

Kay Jewelers offers financing through its store credit card, including promotional zero-down plans for purchases of $300 or more. Its Vault Rewards loyalty program earns members one “Gem” per dollar spent, plus a birthday perk, special offers, and free shipping.

Blue Nile has no proprietary financing and no loyalty program, though it offers several standard payment options.

Online Shopping Experience

Kay Jewelers features a web design that targets the wedding market primarily, while Blue Nile focuses on any diamond jewelry and loose diamonds.

As for the images, both sites feature high quality visuals, but by comparison, Blue Nile’s renders are more realistic, and all the rings include a 360° video, which allows you to turn the ring and makes the experience feel more real.

Online vs In-Store Shopping

Blue Nile is built for online-first buying. Its renders, images, and videos are designed so you never need to see a diamond in person before purchasing. It does have physical stores for in-person inquiries, but that’s not its focus.

Kay Jewelers operates over 1,000 U.S. stores, reflecting its emphasis on in-person sales. Its from-scratch ring design service is only available in-store, not online.

Diamond Certifications

A key factor when choosing a diamond is whether or not it comes with a certificate. If it is a natural diamond, the certificate you want is one from GIA (the Gemological Institute of America).

Blue Nile has an extensive inventory of GIA certified diamonds, and you can even view the certificate online. It serves not only as a certificate of authenticity but also describes the diamond’s quality. Blue Nile provides this certificate for loose diamonds as well as for its customizable diamond jewelry.

Kay Jewelers lists only one ring with a GIA grade noted, without displaying the certificate itself. None of its other diamond jewelry comes certified.

Why Choose Kay Jewelers?

Kay Jewelers is worth choosing for its financing options, offered through a membership card that comes with perks like free delivery and a birthday benefit.

It also suits shoppers who want personalized service in the store, or who aren’t especially concerned with evaluating diamond quality themselves and would rather delegate that task to the company.

Beyond financing, Kay stands out for its in-store services and its access to exclusive designer collections.

Why Choose Blue Nile?

Blue Nile is worth choosing for its high quality images and 360 degree videos of diamonds and jewelry, along with having the largest online diamond inventory of the two.

It’s also one of the few online sites where you can buy loose diamonds or choose the exact diamond for your ring, thanks to its design software that lets you fully customize the engagement ring.

On top of that, it features diamonds with grading reports from GIA and IGI, and the certificate isn’t just digital: the diamond comes with a physical certificate as well.

Which One Is Better: Kay Jewelers or Blue Nile?

Before you decide, it helps to think through a few practical questions rather than just comparing prices.

Start with whether you need to see and touch the ring before buying. If so, Kay’s 1,000+ stores make that easy. If you want to be able to do everything online, Blue Nile lets you pick the stone, review its GIA report, and see it on video before you buy.

It’s also worth considering how much a physical, verifiable certificate matters to you. If you want a grading report you can hold and compare against the diamond itself, that’s a Blue Nile strength Kay doesn’t currently match.

I recommend that you figure out your budget and preferred setting style first, before comparing specific diamonds or ring prices. Once you know that, spend 15 minutes on each site’s design tool. If you find yourself wanting to zoom in, rotate, and inspect the actual stone, that’s a sign you’re a Blue Nile shopper. If you find yourself wanting to walk into a store and talk to someone, that’s a sign you’re a Kay shopper.

Either way, each store has an extensive diamond inventory, plenty of options to choose from, unique settings, and romantic designs. Whichever you choose, you’re likely to walk away with a brilliant diamond ring.
