Shopping for an engagement ring is an exciting occasion, with lots of options to explore, but it can be hard to know where to start.

Brilliant Earth and VRAI are easy to put on the same shortlist. Both are popular online jewelers with strong lab-grown diamond offerings and a heavy emphasis on sustainability. The similarities get thinner once you start looking at how each company sources diamonds, grades them, customization options, and the overall shopping experience.

For a shopper who wants a wide field of options before narrowing down, Brilliant Earth has more directions to explore. VRAI is more focused, so someone who already knows they want a lab-grown diamond may prefer that tighter model.

How Their Sustainability Approaches Differ

Seeing words like ethical, sustainable, or eco-friendly on a jewelry site is encouraging, but those terms can cover very different parts of the process. One company may be talking about how the diamond was grown, while another is looking at renewable energy, repurposed metal, labor standards, carbon emissions, or traceability. If sustainability is part of why you are considering a lab-grown diamond, the details are where you need to look.

VRAI has a fairly direct production story. Its diamonds begin as rough grown at Diamond Foundry’s facility in the Pacific Northwest, which VRAI describes as a zero-emission foundry powered by renewable energy. The diamonds are later cut and polished before being graded through VRAI’s own system. The origin of the rough diamond is relatively straightforward to trace.

Brilliant Earth covers a wider range of approaches. Its Renewable Collection includes diamonds that are grown, cut, and polished using 100% renewable wind and solar energy, while its Capture Collection uses captured carbon as a source material.

How Diamond Grading Differs

Before researching these brands, I would not have known there was a meaningful difference between an IGI report, a GIA assessment, and an in-house diamond certificate. 

Brilliant Earth uses independent grading labs, including IGI, GIA, GCAL, and HRD. The labs evaluate the diamond separately from the company selling it, although their reports can look different.

• IGI uses familiar individual color and clarity grades, such as F color or VS1 clarity, along with carat weight, polish, symmetry, and other details. 
• GIA now uses an overall Premium or Standard assessment for qualifying colorless-to-near-colorless lab-grown diamonds. Before October 2025, it used more detailed color and clarity grading similar to its natural-diamond reports. 
• GCAL and HRD are also independent gemological laboratories that issue grading reports for lab-grown diamonds. 

VRAI handles grading in-house. Its trained gemologists issue a VRAI Diamond Certification, which the company backs with its lifetime warranty and diamond value guarantee. Buyers can also request IGI grading for an additional fee if they want an outside report.

A “certified diamond” can mean different things depending on who evaluated the stone, which grading system they used, and what information is included. Open the report or certificate for the diamond you are considering so you know what the designation represents.

How Much Choice Do You Want When Designing an Engagement Ring?

A huge online inventory sounds wonderful until you are staring at thousands of diamonds and cannot remember the difference between VVS2 and VS1.

Starting with the visual decision can cut down a lot of noise.

I find it easiest to start with shape. Once that decision is made, you can start asking smaller questions. Do you like solitaire or halo? Do you want side stones? Yellow gold, white gold, or platinum? Would you rather put more of the budget toward carat weight or toward a higher color or clarity grade?

Brilliant Earth has a lot of room to play with those variables. Its current ring builder lets you start with a natural diamond, lab-grown diamond, gemstone, or setting, and narrow the diamond inventory by shape, price, carat, cut, color, clarity, grading report, and other specifications. Its engagement-ring collection spans solitaire, three-stone, hidden halo, halo, vintage-inspired, nature-inspired, and other styles.

That breadth can help if you have a fixed budget but are flexible about how to use it. Maybe a slightly lower clarity grade gets you closer to the carat size you wanted. Maybe the pear you love looks better to you in a simple solitaire than in the halo you’ve had on your Pinterest board for two years. But for some people, all that choice is overwhelming.

VRAI only offers lab-grown diamonds, but that does not mean the ring itself is especially limited. Its Cut for You program offers more than 30 diamond shapes, including some that are harder to find in a standard jewelry case, and shoppers can still choose among different settings, metals, and design styles. Why Seeing the Ring in Person Can Help

High-definition images are designed to show a diamond at its best, with close-up detail and angles that catch the light. To get a fuller picture, 360° views and virtual try-on tools show the ring from multiple angles and even on your hand. Still, some shoppers find it helpful to see the ring in person under everyday lighting before making a final decision.

If you live near a VRAI showroom, the network-size difference may mean very little. If you don’t, you’ll likely have a physical Brilliant Earth location within reach.

Even if you expect to order online, trying on a few rings can aid in your decision-making process. A two-carat stone may look much larger or smaller on your hand than you imagined, a setting may sit higher than you expected, and the metal you saved in inspiration photos may not be the one you like best on your hand.

The sparkle is the part I would especially want to see in person. Online videos can show you how a diamond performs, but seeing it move on your own hand under ordinary lighting can tell you whether you like it outside a jewelry photographer’s setup.

How to Compare Price Fairly

The best way to compare prices between retailers is to build two rings as closely matched as possible. Pick the same shape, keep the carat weight close, match color and clarity as well as the grading systems allow, then choose settings with similar metal and design before comparing the final totals.

Once the two rings are close enough in shape, size, grade, and setting to make the comparison fair, look at where the remaining price difference comes from. An extra $500 for a setting you strongly prefer is a different decision from spending $500 to move up a clarity grade when both stones appear equally clean to your eye.

You may decide that carat size is worth protecting while clarity has some room to move, or that the setting is the part you will notice every day and deserves more of the budget.

Returns, Resizing, and Warranties

Brilliant Earth and VRAI are fairly similar on the broad policies, with 30-day return windows, lifetime warranty coverage on qualifying rings, and resizing support. The bigger differences are in resizing, engraving, and how certain settings are handled.

For a standard engagement ring, the policies are pretty close. Choose the one that best suits your needs.

Brilliant Earth vs VRAI: Where Should You Start?

If you are still working out the ring itself, Brilliant Earth has more options, from natural and lab-grown diamonds to gemstones, independent grading labs, sustainably sourced collections, and a larger setting assortment. I would start with Brilliant Earth because I like having a wider field to browse once I know the shape I want. I would rather narrow down from too many options than talk myself into the closest ring available.

VRAI starts with a narrower premise because the center stone is always one of its lab-grown diamonds, which can be appealing if you have already made that decision and would rather spend your time comparing shape, size, grade, and setting.

Start with the decisions you already have. Shape and budget can narrow the search quickly, and from there you can spend more time on whichever details you care about most, whether that is how the diamond was produced, who graded it, the setting, or whether you can see the ring in person.
