An engagement ring isn’t just any piece of jewelry. For most people it’s the most meaningful thing they’ll ever wear, which is why so many choose to design their own rather than pick something off a shelf.
But if you’re considering a custom ring, the most important question to ask yourself right now is a simple one: Do you have enough time?
As a jewelry designer who specializes in engagement rings, I want to walk you through exactly what the process looks like, how long each stage takes, and what to watch out for along the way.
The more you understand before you begin, the smoother the whole experience will be.
Custom vs. Semi-Custom: What’s the Difference?

Before anything else, it helps to understand that “custom” doesn’t always mean the same thing, and the distinction has a big impact on your timeline and budget.
A fully custom ring is built from scratch around your vision. You decide everything: the metal, the band style, the stone shape, the setting, and all the fine details. Nothing exists until you create it.
A semi-custom ring starts from an existing design that you then personalize. You might choose your stone, change the metal, or adjust certain elements, but you’re working within a framework the brand has already designed. Some retailers only allow you to swap the diamond, with everything else staying fixed.
Remember, a custom ring typically takes anywhere from three to five months from your first conversation to the moment it arrives in your hands.
Here is what that process actually looks like:
Step 1: Design Consultation (About 1 Week)
This is where everything begins. Your first consultation is a chance to share your ideas with the jeweler, whether that’s a rough sketch on paper, a folder of reference photos, or simply a feeling you’re trying to capture. Nothing is too vague at this stage.
During the consultation you’ll work through all the key decisions together: the metal type, the band style, the number and type of stones, and the overall aesthetic you’re going for. A good jeweler will ask the right questions, offer guidance where you need it, and help you make decisions that are both beautiful and practical.
Most brands structure this as two meetings. The first is focused on gathering your ideas and preferences. The second presents a finished sketch or digital rendering for your review and approval. From there, production can begin.
Choosing Your Diamond or Gemstone

In the design stage, the gemstone that will be set in it must be taken into account.
If the choice is a colored gemstone, the salesperson will tell you what options are available and in what shape, keep in mind that not all gemstones are suitable for an engagement ring due to various aspects such as durability or softness.
If you choose a diamond, the advisor will have to inform you which type of setting is most suitable depending on the shape of the diamond you want.
Setting a marquise diamond is not the same as setting a princess diamond, for example; with a marquise diamond, you have to take care of the points so they don’t break.
Choosing Your Setting
There are different ring settings: bezel setting, pavé setting, invisible setting, etc.
The choice will depend on the client’s personal taste, but also on the shape of the chosen stone, as some settings are more flattering for certain shapes than others.
Some settings are also more secure than others, so during the consultation I recommend discussing all these factors so the client understands the pros and cons of their chosen design.
At this stage, it’s important that the person you speak with guides you and helps you choose the best option for the design you have in mind. This is the most important stage, so you should feel comfortable during the consultation.
Step 2: Design Approval and 3D Rendering (1 to 2 Weeks)
You may have heard of CAD or design rendering. Lately, many brands are translating their initial design into a 3D rendering before starting production.
This design is more realistic, like a photograph. This way, the client has a clearer idea of the final product, and if they approve it, the next stage of production begins.
The total time this process takes depends on the number of modifications made; if the design is approved on the first try, the process will be faster. Once the design is approved, the exact price of the ring can be determined.
At this stage, half the payment is usually requested upfront, with the other half due once the piece is finished.
However, this varies considerably depending on the retailer.
Step 3: Ring Production (3 to 5 Weeks)
This part usually takes several weeks as it is a handcrafted process that includes the production of the ring, the setting, the polishing, and the final touches.

Molding and Casting the Ring
Generally, the production of a ring begins by manually molding the design in wax in some cases, and in others, this process is carried out using 3D design software and printed on a 3D printer.
Depending on the design, it can be also made from a cast of a classic design and modified accordingly. All of these methods vary according to the design and the brand.
Setting the Stone
Once the ring body is ready, the stone is set.
This is usually done manually, taking care with the type of setting. It’s a very delicate procedure; the setting must hold the stone securely so it doesn’t come out, but it shouldn’t damage it.
Some settings are easier than others, and the one you choose will increase the price of the ring.
Step 4: Final Review and Shipping (1 to 3 Weeks)

Generally, a final review is always done before shipping the product. The customer is contacted to show them the final result and double-check the size.
If the ring is approved, it is shipped to the customer; otherwise, this step is delayed.
How Far in Advance Should You Order?
The time required for all these processes always depends on each jewelry store.
Keep in mind that if the design is complex or highly personalized, production will take longer, and if many changes or modifications are made during each stage, the time will be even longer.
That’s why, if you’re in a rush, I don’t recommend a custom engagement ring. My advice is to begin with the process at least 4 months in advance, in case of unexpected delays.
Be careful with special dates, jewelry stores get very busy when Christmas or Valentine’s Day approaches.
Custom Engagement Rings from Online Retailers
Online engagement ring retailers have made the buying process much more accessible by allowing customers to customize a ring directly on the website without going through a fully custom design process.

Some of the most established online retailers include:
- Blue Nile
- James Allen
- Brilliant Earth
- Ritani
Each offers a slightly different experience, but all are designed for buyers who want a more streamlined and transparent way to shop for an engagement ring.
Among them, Blue Nile remains one of the most recognized names in the online diamond industry because of its large diamond inventory, competitive pricing, and straightforward customization process.
Buyers can choose a loose diamond, pair it with a setting, and preview the final ring before purchasing. The platform is especially popular with shoppers looking for classic engagement ring styles and a wide range of natural and lab grown diamond options.
Most online ring builders also make it easy to compare settings, diamond shapes, metal types, and pricing side by side. That level of visibility can help buyers feel more confident during the decision-making process, particularly if they are purchasing an engagement ring for the first time.
For many shoppers, an online ring builder offers the right balance between customization, convenience, and value without the higher cost and longer timeline that often come with a fully custom ring.
Pros and Cons of a Custom Engagement Ring
Pros
A custom engagement ring allows you to create a design that feels personal and unique.
You will typically work directly with a design team throughout the process, which gives you more flexibility with design details and budget decisions.
Adjustments to the setting, metal type, or center stone can help tailor the ring to your style and price range.
Cons
However, custom work also comes with a few limitations. The process is usually more expensive because of the additional design and production involved.
Timelines often range from 3 to 5 months depending on the complexity of the ring, and delays can happen during sourcing or manufacturing.
Most custom rings are also final sale, and you will not be able to try on the finished ring before production is complete.
When a Custom Ring Is Not the Right Choice
A custom ring may not be the best option if you need the ring quickly or have a specific proposal deadline tied to a holiday, vacation, or special event. It may also be unnecessary if your ideal ring is a classic style that is already widely available through online retailers.
If your main priority is selecting the diamond rather than redesigning the setting, an online ring builder is often the more practical and cost-effective choice. Buyers who prefer a faster and more predictable process also tend to have a better experience with ready-to-order settings.
Is a Custom Engagement Ring Right for You?
If there’s one thing I can say for sure, it’s that to make a custom engagement ring, you need time. This handcrafted process takes several months, and there can be delays – sometimes during production, other times caused by changes along the way.
If you’re wondering if it’s worth it, let me just say that custom engagement rings add something extra to the proposal. It makes the ring more special and unique.
Plus, custom designs are more related to luxury and a feeling of exclusivity.
That being said, if you don’t have the time or extra cash, there are thousands of engagement rings out there to choose from. There are very unique retailers that specialize in non-traditional designs, earthy textures, vibrant colors, and even bizarre styles that will make your ring stand out.
Still, if you’ve got the time and a vision, go for it! Your partner will probably be blown away by the thought and care that you put into every facet of your ring.
